Visit any science library: Where once you would have seen racks and racks full of journals, you now see empty space.

This is not evidence of decline. As we celebrate the 350th anniversary of the first scientific journal, we are in the midst of a profound change in how research is communicated. Paper has largely been supplanted by digital means of dissemination.

What has not changed nearly as much, however, is the process by which research is written, adjudicated, and published. Over the past decade, a growing number of researchers have highlighted problems in our current system and questioned our adherence to practices that often arose to accommodate the limitations of print.
