Quantifying cross-disciplinary research in the health sciences: a bibliometric analysis using author affiliations
Description: 
As recognition of the value of cross-disciplinary research teams for innovation and translational research continues to grow, and institutions develop training programs and resources that encourage team science, methods for measuring the success of cross-disciplinary research efforts are needed. We describe a project using bibliometric methods to quantify the degree to which an individual researcher collaborated with researchers in other disciplines. Research articles were used as evidence of research activity, and authors’ departmental affiliations were used as an indication of discipline. The Scopus database, a single source of structured data, allowed measurement of the number of disciplines a single research project crossed. We adopted a “field of training” classification scheme used by the National Institutes of Health. Then, through an iterative process, we modified the scheme to enable classification of all academic, research, and clinical departmental affiliations encountered in a corpus of biomedical references for 63 authors retrieved from Scopus. Classifying affiliations of all authors on all papers permitted the assignment of a “discipline count” for each article and an average discipline count for each author. In the initial application of this classification scheme, the cross-disciplinary research activity of three peer groups of early-career investigators in the health sciences were compared.
