Presentation Title:
Couture Curricula - BD2K Data Science Tailored to Your Needs
Description:
Data science - studying the creation, use, and sharing of data in research - has entered our professional activities. Librarians, researchers, students, and publishers alike are looking to leverage new data science techniques and technologies in a wide variety of contexts. To address this problem, the National Institutes of Health launched the Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K) initiative, with the goal of improving health research by training students and researchers to better utilize and generate knowledge from large biomedical datasets. Here we present two efforts towards these ends: 1) a set skills courses; and 2) Open Educational Resources (OERs). Topics covered include problem description, data set discovery, preparation and creation of data sets, implementation of analytic techniques, ethics, and effective communication. The skills course is offered in a hybrid learning environment, part online and partially through in-person intensive courses. The initial offerings of the skills course included a week long intensive course, and a 2-evening course, both focused on learners at the advanced introductory level. The Open Educational Resources will cover 32 topics, which will be freely available for educators and learners who can use them “out of the box” or adapt them for their own purposes. These materials include powerpoint slide decks, video tutorials, exercises and recommended readings. A list of topics and a current draft of the materials are available at: http://skynet.ohsu.edu/bd2k. The ultimate goal of these training opportunities is to educate diverse learners as data scientists in order to improve best practices in training future scientists and, ultimately, knowledge discovery.
