What's the diff? EuropePMC author manuscripts versus the publisher version of record

What value do academic publishers *add* to biomedical research manuscripts? It's not clear to me. By comparing author manuscripts uploaded to EuropePMC with the final, 'version of record' article made available by the publisher, we can gain objective data on the extent & type of contribution that publishers add to the final paper. I give a rough worked example here: http://rossmounce.co.uk/2015/01/12/author-manuscripts-versus-the-publisher-version-of-record/ This data would be extremely useful to gather, with reference to discussions around the value, efficiency & quality of academic journal publishing services and decoupling scholarly journals [1]. Journal publishing services sometimes improve author manuscripts, but also in some instances they make manuscripts worse by introducing typesetting errors. Thus I propose a systematic investigation of the contribution(s) made by academic journal publishers, on top of author manuscripts. [1] Priem, J. and Hemminger, B. M. 2012.
