Hugh applies object relation psychoanalysis to the cultural analysis of political and popular cultural processes of representation in American and European societies. He is particularly concerned with the functions and meanings of emotions in environmental discourse; the dipositif of risk and therapeutic culture. He is currently investigating the affective dynamics of environmental advocacy in various media forms. He is extensively published on the representation of the ‘war on terror’ on British television (2010; 2011; 2013; 2014, 2015) and representations of loss and environmental advocacy in film (2014, co-authored with Philip Hammond).
