Magdalena Skipper obtained her Frist class BSc Hons degree in Genetics from University of Nottingham, UK. She subsequently obtained her PhD from University of Cambridge, UK for her work on genetics of C. elegans in the laboratory of Dr Jonathan Hodgkin, at the MRC LMB. She went on to spend two years as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Lincoln’s Inn Fields ICRF laboratories in London, UK, (now CRUK) where she studied cell fate determination in vertebrate intestinal epithelium.
In 2001 she joined Nature Publishing Group as Associate Editor for Nature Reviews Genetics, a monthly commissioned reviews’ journal. In 2002 she became Chief Editor of Nature Reviews Genetics and managed a team of Associate and Assistant editors for 6 years. Under her leadership the journal established itself as a prominent and impactful source of information in the field and a must-read for young scientists. In 2008, she took on the role of Senior Editor for genetics and genomics and Team Leader at Nature. As part of her task to identify, select and publish the very best studies in the field she was the editor for a number of seminar papers, including those of ENCODE, Epigenome Roadmap, HapMap, 1000 Genomes and TCGA projects. In 2015, she took on the role of Executive Editor driving and overseeing the launch of a new portfolio of journals – Nature Partner Journals.
In 2016, she joined Altius Institute for Biomedical Sciences as Director for Scientific Communications and Publishing, whwre she worked with Altius researchers to optimize their science communication strategies, including investigating new ways to disseminate scientific discoveries and the underlying data.
In 2017, she took the role of Editor in Chief of Nature Communications, a multidisciplinary open access journal, part of the Nature Research portfolio. Since July 1st, 2018 she is Editor in Chief of Nature.
