Dr Mancuso has 15-years experience on neurology and on treating patients with various neurological diseases. He has worked in the Stroke Unit of the Department of Neurology of the University of Pisa; is currently a staff-member of the neuromuscular disorder group of the Neurological Institute of Pisa, and physician expertise of the Laboratory of Liquor (CSF) analysis and molecular biology of neurological diseases at the same Institute. Dr Mancuso is the head of the Centre of Neurogenetics and expertise for mitochondrial diseases and rare diseases at the Neurological Clinic of the University of Pisa (Orphanet Center EUGTIT247621), and  has also a 10-years training experience on EMG/NCS exams and carotid and transcranial Doppler evaluation.

Scientific and research activity of Dr Michelangelo Mancuso has mainly been conducted in the field of mitochondrial, neuromuscular and neurodegenerative diseases. Sectors of interest are epidemiological and clinical-molecular correlation studies in muscular pathologies, investigations of genotype-phenotype interrelationships and physiopathology of metabolic alterations in mitochondrial diseases, assessment of biological and genetic markers in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease and other genetic neuromuscular and neurodegenerative disorders. As a whole results of his research activity have been presented in national and international congresses and published for a number of more than 150 full papers on peer-rewieved Life Science/Current Contents cited scientific journals (available on request). According to Google Scholar, Dr Mancuso’s articles have more than 6000 citations, and the H-Index is 37. Dr Mancuso is actively involved in multiple projects mainly focusing on mitochondrial diseases. He is Steering Committee Member of the Italian Network of Mitochondriologists, Granted by Telethon (GUP09004), and is also member of the International Consortium of Mitochondrial diseases experts for the development of the International Database for Mitochondrial diseases. Dr Mancuso also won several awards for his researches, including the “Gianluca Signorini” award for researches in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Dr Mancuso acts as peer- reviewer for numerous scientific journals (including Lancet Neurology, New England Journal of Medicine, Human Molecular Genetics, Neuromuscular disorders, Journal of Neurology, and more) and for several National Research Programme (including the French National Research Agency, Polish National Agency, and more).
