Biography

Dr. Sharon Franks has served UC San Diego since 1993. As Director, Research Proposal Development Service (RPDS), Sharon works with faculty throughout campus to facilitate the development of large, interdisciplinary research proposals. Sharon provides guidance, coordination, and in-depth support for proposals to federal, state, and private sponsors, including NSF, NIH, DOE, DoD, NASA, USDA, CEC, CIRM, and the Packard, Keck, Moore, and Sloan Foundations, among others. Since the establishment of RPDS in 2009, Sharon has contributed to the development of proposals with budget requests totaling more than $900 million. Among Sharon’s other responsibilities are supervision of the campus’ limited-submissions function, design and implementation of professional development activities for early- and mid-career investigators in the area of grantsmanship, and strategic planning for the identification and dissemination of funding opportunities. Prior to launching RPDS, Sharon created and led institutionalization of a proposal development initiative at Scripps Institution of Oceanography to help investigators address the National Science Foundation's broader impacts review criterion. Sharon holds a B.A. in Earth Sciences from Dartmouth College and a Ph.D. in Oceanography from Oregon State University.
